In this video, made for the Oslo freedom Forum 2009, Hans Rosling talks about the difficulty in measuring progress in Human Rights in the form of comparable numerical statistics. He also shows the surprisingly weak correlation between existing estimates for democracy and socio-economic progress. The reason may be that democracy and human rights measurements are badly done. It may also be that democracy and human rights are dimensions of development that are in themselves difficult to assign numerical values. But it also seems as much improvement in health, economy and education can be achieved with modest degrees of human rights and democracy. Hans Roslings concluding remark is that Human rights and Democracy maybe should be mainly regarded as values in themselves rather than means to ach...

Bernie Sanders to announce a People’s Platform in Washington, DC and Vermont. Sanders will be the featured speaker at Labor Day events in White River Junction and Middlebury. At each event, local leaders will be talking about ways in which people can unite behind a common agenda to move forward legislation that improves the lives of all Vermonters. This summer, Our Revolution began working with dozens of grassroots organizations to back the #PeoplesPlatform, a bold, progressive policy agenda that it used to lobbying members of Congress to support during their August recess. The goals is to have the majority of the U.S. House Democratic Caucus signed on to cosponsor the following bills when they return in September: Health Care for All: H.R. 676 Medicare for All Act Education for All: H.R. 1880 College for All Act of 2017 Workers' Rights: H.R. 15 Raise the Wage Act Women's Rights: H.R. 771 Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH Woman) Act of 2017 Voting Rights: H.R. 2840 Automatic Voter Registration Act Environmental Justice: Climate Change Bill (yet to be introduced) Criminal Justice and Immigrant Rights: H.R. 3543 Justice Is Not for Sale Act of 2017 Tax on Wall Street: H.R. 1144 Inclusive Prosperity Act In Vermont, Rights & Democracy – celebrating it’s second birthday this Labor Day – is leading the effort to build a grassroots movement around issues of economic, environmental, health care, social, and racial justice. From the historic Women’s March in Montpelier (20,000 people) to the Climate March Solidarity Rally (5000 people), RAD has been working with other grassroots groups to unite Vermonters in resistance to the Trump agenda, and turn that energy into building a common sense, progressive agenda in Vermont. This summer RAD held events throughout the state to promote a people’s agenda that legislators can get behind when they return to Montpelier in January. Our message is simple: Resistance isn’t enough, we need our elected officials to take bold steps to put legislation on Gov. Phil Scott’s desk. That bold legislation includes: A universal health care system in Vermont, with a first step being Universal Primary Care Raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour Enacting paid family and medical leave insurance Improved worker protections, including stronger enforcement against worker misclassification Investing in the infrastructure and protections necessary to ensure clean water, clean air, and clean soils for all Empowering communities to move toward a 100 percent renewable energy economy while maintaining local autonomy and democratic participation in shaping a just transition away from fossil fuels

PowerPoint available at: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Mr-Raymond-Civics-Eoc-Academy This video teaches students the importance of the Magna Carta, the Mayflower Compact, the English Bill of Rights and Thomas Paine's Common Sense in influencing the Founding Fathers in creating the US Government. The Magna Carta first demonstrated to Europeans and later Americans that power was not unlimited and the rule of law could be applied to those in power. The Mayflower Compact established the tradition of self-rule in the Colonies and established the first social contract on US soil. The English Bill of Rights provided an inspiration not just for the U.S. Bill of Rights but that protecting rights was a job for the government. Thomas Paine's Common Sense was an inspiration for the Declaration of Independence and greatly led to calls for Americans to establish a government based on republican principles. All of these documents again inspired the founding fathers when creating the U.S. government and a Constitution that would embody these principles. Like most of the videos on Mr. Raymond’s Civics EOC Academy this video ends with a review “quiz.” Remember that the PowerPoint in this video as well as a variety of lesson plans and activities are available at Teachers Pay Teachers. Mr. Raymond’s Civics E.O.C. Academy was designed for students taking the Florida Civics End-of-Course (EOC) Exam. However, as many states are implementing Civics Exams, these videos will work for all students of Civics, US Government, and US History. Currently students have to pass a civics state exam in order to graduate in Idaho, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Arizona, North Dakota, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah. These videos look at all of the civics benchmarks that will be tested on most state civics exams. The Magna Carta is considered the first constitutional document that produced the principle of "limited government" and the beginning of the end of "absolutism." This concept especially resonated with the Enlightenment ideals of the founding fathers in the quest for inspiration in creating the federal government of the United States. The Mayflower Compact established the tradition of self-government from the earliest settlement of the United States. This document also started a tradition of the "social compact" or social-contract that still exists in the United States. It also confirms the establishment of popular sovereignty in America. The English Bill of Rights was of course an influence to the Founding Fathers as they created the US Bill of Rights. Many of the rights and protections of central power listed in the English Bill of Rights following the Glorious Revolution of England in 1689 found the way into the US Bill of Rights including protections from "cruel and unusual punishment," the right to a jury, "free speech," and others. Thomas Paine's Common Sense was one of America's first best-sellers and a huge inspiration to Patriots demands of declaring independence from Great Britain. Widely read in 1776 in colonial America this pamphlet went a long way to convincing reluctant future Americans that the time was right for The Declaration of Independence. As a civics teacher I have often looked for civics YouTube video clips to show my students. I hope these videos will serve as a supplement to lessons for civics teachers, US history teachers, US government teachers and their students. While they might be a little basic for AP Government students, they could serve as a refresher of basic concepts and content. I have also thought that these videos could help those who are going to take the naturalization test to become US Citizens. I have also been reached by parents whose children are taking Florida Virtual School’s (FLVS) Civics class. ***For noncommercial, educational, and archival purposes under Law of Fair Use as provided in section 107 of the US copyright law. Event Info: http://www.ned.org/events/implementing-human-rights-as-a-path-to-democracy-in-vietnam-2/ As Vietnam opens its economy and expands its multilateral partnerships, the Vietnamese government continues to look to the West for help in coping with its economic crisis and political problems. Even as Vietnam has made recent gains in negotiations over the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the partial lifting of the U.S. arms embargo, human rights violations at the hands of the ruling Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) remain a cause for concern. Drawing on his experiences as a prominent human rights lawyer and political prisoner, Dr. Cu Huy Ha Vu will discuss the CPV’s repressive laws and actions, offer a perspective on the current state of Vietnamese civil society, and outline recommendations for expanding freedom in Vietnam. He will argue for the urgency of implementing human rights laws and call for the democratization of Vietnam and greater East Asia. His presentation will be followed by comments by Dr. Zachary Abuza.

The Pontifical Gregorian University in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation has created a series of lectures entitled "Reflections on the Christian Cultures of the World." A German political foundation of this kind is dedicated to the cardinal principles of freedom, justice and solidarity. Wilhelm Staudacher, Head of the Kondrad Adenauer Foundation in Rome: "The Konrad Adenauer Foundation supports the Gregorian in this series of conferences. Our foundation is linked with, and harks back to, Christian values. So for us it is important to have information about different cultural assumptions and above all to know what the Christian faith has produced." In the framework of these conferences a meeting was held on January 25 entitled "The Christian heritage in secular human rights" whose relator was Joseph Isensee, Professor Emeritus of Public Law and Philosophy. The Constitutional State and democracy are, according To Isensee, a product of Christianity although the Church misunderstood this until Vatican II. However, the Church has been critical in the defense of human rights and will continue to be their only remaining defender.Prof. Joseph Isensee, Professor Emeritus of Public Law and Philosophy: "Without the Church we never had a formulation for human rights, which are essentially children of Christianity, because Christianity reawakens a sense of human dignity, the uniqueness of each person, the equality of all peoples, without discrimination on the basis of religious belief, sex or social position. And the concept of man as in the image of God is a religious thought that has produced, throughout history, effects on relations between persons and between citizens and the state. The evolution of human rights has been a long historical process, sometimes even at odds with the Church, but human rights as we know them today are a product of the Church."  According to Professor Isensee, human rights are not generators of meaning, but are based on the freedom of self-determination of people. In the search for meaning and truth, in fact, everyone must commit themselves in the first person. Because freedom means responsibility. This requires a critical look at the market of possibilities. www.unigre.it
